Hi everyone, how are you today?
A few year ago, coloured mascaras made a bit of a comeback. I remember owning the pink, green, blue and gold from YSL around this time, but grew out of it when I realised you couldn’t really wear pink mascara for work…. as much as I wanted to!
It didn’t really work with the uniform!
So, I got back into boring, reliable black and brown mascaras. They work with most looks and make your eyelashes really pretty, so why try anything else?
Well, I was watching Disney’s Descendents the other day (yes I am a 32 year old woman who enjoys cheesy Disney Channel movies) and one of the characters, Evie wears blue mascara, and it really makes her eyes pop. And it made me want to really try blue mascara again.
If you look at a colour wheel, some makeup artists and creators use opposing colours and tones to make certain things stand out. For example, if you take green, the opposite shade in the colour wheel is red and orange tones, therefore, these sort of shades will really make your eyes stand out.
With this in mind, the actress playing Evie has brown eyes. And the shade opposite brown is blue. Therefore, blue mascara will really make her eyes pop. And she looks absolutely stunning in the film.
Now, I have blue eyes. So a blue mascara on it’s own isn’t really going to stand out much on my eyes. However, if I use neutral-tones eyeshadows, the blue mascara will contrast and do awesome things….. I hoped.
So the mascara I found was the Benefit Bad Gal Bang mascara. This is a really intense bright blue. It looks gorgeous on the brush. The mascara itself costs £22. I have used the black one in the past, and I wasn’t really impressed, but I was willing to give it a second chance with the blue tube.
With a white primer underneath (any will do, although I like the L’Oreal Lash paradise Primer), this really looks stunning. The blue in the tube really stands out, and it looks amazing against neutral toned eyeshadow.
So yes, I would definitely say that blue mascara is worth giving a try. If you want to experiment with it, if you’re unsure if you’ll suit it, try something a bit cheaper such as the Collection Extreme Colour Mascara. If you love how it looks, then buy something more expensive such as the benefit one I used.
I have used this mascara a few times since the initial test, and I absolutely love it. It’s definitely something that I would consider buying again in the future (I actually hope that they bring out a maroon shade again).
Have a lovely day guys, and take care.
